Chapter ?: What Dreams May Come (Cian vs Jinja!)

"You're goin' in the dirt, boyo!"
The beefy, red-headed hunk grabbed the practice dummy around the waist and hoisted it up into the air. Cian Enbarr, the Faeblood Brawler, had been practicing this move for hours, trying to nail the perfect suplex.
The dummy's head collided into the mat. Cian bridged his body, back arched, wrestling boots planted on the ground. He smiled, satisfied and sweaty.
"Wish Gio were here to see that one," Cian said, grinning ear to ear. He turned around and patted the dummy on the head. "Sorry 'bout the brain damage, boyo. Too bad you weren't Spike. I'd love to crush that cutie."
Cian stood up, just about ready to hit the showers. He went for his water bottle, minding what his mentor had told him about hydrating. He threw it back and looked at himself in the mirror. Ever since the incident in Vegas, in which Cian's 'blood frenzy' had forced him back to the benches for a month and a half, he'd taken the time to practice his craft (magick and muscle) and be kinder to himself.
This included not beating himself about his body. The singlet he usually wore hid some of his tummy. He was a strong Irish lad, all meat and potatoes, and not shredded like some the pretty ones around here. However, it was Spike (the prettiest of the lot) who had managed to convince Cian to try out briefs. On a dare. That twink was a constant thorn in Cian's side, but as of late, he'd warmed up to the feminine (and absolutely jacked) New Yorker. Of course, it was easy for a cupcake beefcake like him to talk about embracing one's body. His was statuesque.
Still, though Spike was annoying as all get out, his compliments were genuine...if not sometimes aggressive. Cian smiled at himself. "Beefcake brawler has a good ring to it, huh?" he said to his reflection.
He noticed, then, that he wasn't alone. At first he thought he was seeing things. Maybe he was dehydrated. Standing at the back of the practice room, a tall (very tall) figured stood. He (at least, Cian suspected it was a 'he') was cloaked in gold, and wore a gold mask. It was hard to make much else of them out from where Cian stood. They were obscured by the shadows by that corner of the room.
Suddenly, Cian wished he had brought along a training buddy. He preferred to go it alone. Perhaps that had been unwise.
Cian glared at the intruder. He didn't recognize them. "Who the bloody fuck are ye?" Cian snarled back. "You with Firebird?" Then, it hit him. "Wait a minute...you ain't that weirdo who's been haunting backstage at our shows, are ye?"
The dark figure's eyes glowed, full of magickal intent. "Firebird! Ha, pity the thought," the deep voice said. "I mean you no harm, Faebrawler. I have merely come to issue you a challenge."
Cian looked the giant up and down. He was big. No doubt he was powerful in the magick department too. But Cian didn't back down from a challenge. "That so, boyo? You want to mess with the Faeblood, eh?"
But he didn't like how the man drew closer, nor that creepy, wide smile on his face. It glinted from beneath his mask.
Shit. Cian summoned his power. "You might not want to get closer, champ. Ain't your ma teach ye how to talk to a gentleman you fancy?"
The ground in front of the practice room suddenly came to life, writhing with green and black serpents. The snakes hissed and snarled at the newcomer.
But the man in the gold mask simply laughed. "Ah, the glyph of Mind! You are indeed a son of the Aos sí. But these are parlour tricks."
The gold figure swept his hand. In a moment, Cian's conjured snakes (a mirage) blinked. So did Cian.
And then, the man was behind him, arms wrapped around his throat.
"Fear not," the gold mask said, locking on a (rather comfortable) sleeper. "You're just going out for a few minutes. So I can get you to where you need to go.
"Where..." Cian began sputtering. He had been taught techniques to break out of a hold. But those techniques operated under the assumption his opponent was within their division. This man...well...he had to cap out. These weren't muscles in his arms, but boulders. It wasn't long before Cian felt his head swim, and the darkness come on. "Where are...you...taking...."
Was all he got out before he fell into the dark.
The man held him close to his body, and if Cian were conscious, he'd know how hard his muscles were beneath his robe. "To a place beyond your wildest dreams," the man said.

The Earth trembles before The Mighty Titan!
Legends and myths speak of divine beings with impossible strength, with power so formidable that they were overthrown and sealed away by the gods. Giovanni DiToro, likely descended from that same legendary bloodline, is a modern day myth and hero who draws his strength from the Earth. Whether channelling his gladiator ancestor's dominance, tearing up the battlefield as a wily barbarian, going pure wild as a jungle stud, or just doing some casual gardening, Gio DiToro is the GSA's preeminent muscleman with a soft side. A gentle giant (outside the ring, at least) he holds nothing back when he crushes his opponents!
Giovanni was born in Italy's Tuscan countryside. Like his colleague, Spike, Gio was orphaned as a product of the Great War tearing through Europe. Italy was one of the major theaters of the Great War, in part due to the (now dead) King's alliance with the scheming Alchemists. The Horror of Toscana, a massacre at the Val D'Orcia in which the combatants were petrified en masse (the same event that took Spike's parent's lives) occurred not far from where Gio was born and raised.
Fortunately, Gio was taken in by his battle-hardened and no-nonsense grandmother, a local Strega and matriarch of the family vineyard. As a child, Gio struggled to make friends with other children apart from his cousins, due to introversion as the result of losing his parents as well as being neuro atypical. His grandmother would keep him close at hand, teaching him to identity and cultivate local herbs and vegetables, in addition to gardening, wine making, and other disciplines of the land. Whereas Gio struggled at school, his grandmother found that when presented with a topic or concept that interested her grandson, she could channel his focus into learning it at an expert level.
Gio's hyper fixations served him well in both learning magick (which he used when gardening) and his intertest in bodybuilding and folk wrestling. By age 12, Gio was already undefeated amongst his peers in traditional grappling. By his teenage years, Gio was already receiving marriage proposals from men and women alike, but all would-be suitors would find themselves scared away by Gio's Nona, who deemed none of them worthy enough to date her grandson. This greatly strained their relationship, especially as Gio became more comfortable with coming out of his shell. He moved to Rome with his two cousins, Vincenzo and Lorenzo, polar opposites from each other, and always bickering. Gio helped keep the peace between them.
After an incident in which Gio singlehandedly pushed a collapsed building off a construction crew, a local movie producer (enamoured by Gio's physique) approached Gio to star in a series of 'sword and sandal pictures'. Though Gio could memorize lines perfectly, he wasn't the best actor, but that hardly mattered when it came time to playing the roles of seldom speaking heroes like Hercules, Samson, Tarzan, and a succession of various Barbarian Kings and jungle men. For a brief period, Gio was easily recognized by his colorful posters, usually featuring him being bound by chains, ropes, or vines, or flexing his enormous muscles. These films even had small releases outside of Italy, which did bode well for Gio's futuee, until his grandmother got wind of various abuses Gio and his fellow cast members were experiencing on set. After Gio's costar nearly drowned, the Titan's grandmother stormed onto the set and nearly put the director and producer in the hospital. Gio quit after this, finding the film industry too predatory for his liking.
He didn't need to wait long before his next big break. Cousin Lorenzo became a successful manager for spellbreaking, and soon invited Gio to participate in local matches. Though Nona was firmly against it, Gio's winning streak was unparalleled. When the evil heel Cerberus finally did put Gio on the ropes during a Battle Royal, Nona stormed the ring with her wooden spoon in what spellbreaking aficionados described as 'an unparalleled bloodbath'. The incident disqualified Gio from participating in further matches in Italy, but caught the attention of Colt 'The Bolt' who made an offer to Gio on the spot. As Colt is and has always been inherently adored by mothers, grandmothers, and aunties alike, the charmed Nona reluctantly acquiesced to her grandson going off to Texas to be signed to the GSA. After several years of success, Gio has climbed the ranks to Gold Star level, and is believed to be a contender for the Platinum Championship. Then again, Gio is extremely humble and may not be ready to step back into the spotlight quite yet. He prefers mentoring the newer trainees along with his good friend, Victor, otherwise known as El Amante Intoxico.
Gio is a lot like a giant dog that does not fully understand its own strength. He enjoys challenging his colleagues and teammates to traditional (i.e. naked) wrestling matches. It would be fair to call Gio an exhibitionist, and he constantly complains about wearing 'too much' gear into the ring (to be fair, Buck designed him his very elaborate, Roman gladiator inspired entrance wear). Gio does have quite the body to behold, being one of the most muscular (and hairiest) bodybuilders at the GSA. In his downtime, he enjoys cooking and maintaining the garden with fellow green thumb, Buck. He still struggles with social anxiety, to the point that it often takes him awhile to maintain eye contact with someone. Inside the ring, however, he's as fierce as they come!
Gio is a rare double glyph wielder, and his two Earth-based glyphs work in tandem. The Glyph of Kathon allows him to draw energy from the ground and the environment, adding even more power on top of his natural strength. His body takes on a noticeable glow in this state, not unlike the reflection of polished bronze. As he prefers oiling up before a fight as well, Gio in combat is a living statue of a god come to life!
Gio's secondary Glyph of Chloros gives him the unique ability to accelerate plant growth and mobility, usually reserved for vines (especially grape producing vines) and roots. He uses these vines to entangle or ensnare his opponents to the ground, allowing him to close the distance between nimble and projectile wielding spellbreakers. Like fellow spellbreaker (and mentee) Cian, Gio is a pagan who worships and follows the ways of the old gods, independent from the Faith of the Goddess Aethrin. In particular, his family venerates pastoral and forest deities.
Gio favors traditional, Olympic/Greco-Roman and freestyle wrestling techniques, to the point he eschews most forms of 'pro wrestling'. In fact, it took tons of convincing on Colt's part to get Gio to even come up with a 'finisher' or 'special' technique, as Gio found it hard to wrap his mind around the concept. For submission, Gio prefers a (quite literal) Grape Vine when he is on the ground, using his vines in tandem with his arms and legs to pull his poor opponents apart. For standing finishers, Gio is very fond of a 'Hercules Hug', which likewise harnesses the power of his vines to bind his opponents as they are brutally crushed in his muscles. To this day, no spellbreaker has managed to escape this hold without submitting, and more than a few ribs have been broken as a result! Gio is also fond of using this move in particular to....er....'finish' his opponents in naked matches. Though seldom employed, and most always for top card fights, Gio's 'Wrath of the Titan' sees him yanking his opponent off the ground, holding him up by the arms across his back, and slamming them into the ground (similar to a Razor's Edge). Like his bear hug finisher, nobody has yet to kick out after this!

Epilogue: Guests of the Tsar
During the Reign of Tsar Alexander III, the House of Fabergé—the royal jewellers of the Romanov family—presented to the Tsarina a magnificent golden egg that, when opened, revealed a bejewelled chick. Each year since, around the Feast of Rebirth, the Tsars would receive a new, jewel-encrusted egg, each one more precious than the last.
The eggs varied in scope and design, metals and jewels, materials and theme. One, formed of solid gold and drawn by chariots, contained a small portrait of the royal family. Another, bloody red with rubies, housed a functioning timepiece. Another, a music box. As time went on the eggs became more elaborate. Some even served as automata. With the winding of a key, they might sprout a hidden hen, transform into a dancing noblewoman, the shell becoming a distended ball dress, and waltz across the surface of the throne room for the delight of the heirs. Other eggs, enchanted, might open to reveal a 'living' map of the European continent, with the Russian army advancing against the Alban Empire, driving them back into the shadows.
But those days of feasts, of children's laughter echoing through the palace, are long gone. The world within the walls of the Russian nobility is decidedly more gray.
One, claimed by tuberculosis.
One, taken by war.
One, poisoned.
One, drowned at sea.
One, succumbed to the cursed affliction that had plagued them since infancy.
Publicly, the House of Fabergé presented its last egg (a glass construct portraying the constellations) to the Tsar during the year of the Prince Alexi's passing. A sufferer of the 'Royal curse' of haemophilia, and having not inherited a glyph of his own, the prince died shortly after his twenty-fifth year. The Tsar and Tsarina, inconsolable, and with their armies and infrastructure decimated by Alban incursion, withdrew from the public eye, appointing loyal counsel to manage the affairs of a country largely in ruin.
Unofficially, however, the House of Fabergé did create one more egg—and it was far more magnificent, far more important, than any piece that had come before. The artisans were not alone in this endeavour, though the craftsmen and women were sworn to secrecy (and some, others whisper, were disappeared). Magi, scientists, and those dubious few purported to work for the Black Library (if it existed at all) each had a hand in the fabrication of this most unusual invention.
It was massive egg of chrome and silver and glass, designed as the embodiment of winter. Its sapphire shell was frosted with ice and pearls. Silver cherubs ringed its circumference. All of this was to distract from the series of tubes and strange wires that ran from its underside beneath bowels of the long-unused Winter Palace. It was installed in the Amber Room, another great Russian treasure, a chamber lined wall to floor to ceiling with amber mosaics and statuary and sconces, so when the candles were lit, the whole of the room appeared to be on fire. Against all the red, the cool toned "Winter Phoenix's Egg" (as it was named) stood out all the more against the crumbling tiles.
Every Fabergé Egg was known to house a 'surprise', whether family portrait, music box, clock, or splendid jewel. Thus, it stood to reason that this Egg, most of all, might house something especially precious and desirable. Or, at the very least, truly important...
On that cold summer's day, three guests of the Tsar would discover the Romanov dynasty's final secret.
"You...didn't really think this was all just about men in colorful underwear fighting each other, did you?"

Chapter 13: A Golden Mask / A Sunflower
Colors and shapes, and the blur of frantic people blended in slow motion around Spike, running alongside Marcy Diamond and Cian. PAs and arena staff shouted commands. The crackle of walkie talkies was a distant din. Suddenly, the bright halogen of the hallways leading to the dressing rooms and lockers. On the floor, right outside a door with the placard 'White Tiger', a group of civilians and spellbreakers (Colt included) gathered around a fallen man in a security uniform.
It wasn't the heavy set grunt Spike and Cian had duped before. Likely, it was his boss. Spike froze to the spot. When it came to general knowledge, he was sorely lacking (most of the time), but his impulsive nature had its benefits...namely, jumping into action when needed. But now, there was nothing he could do. Nothing to life. Nothing to break.
Still, after several months of working alongside some of the most talented magi and non-magi alike, Spike had learned to stand back and trust the capabilities of his peers. Shit, I knew I should have taken LiuLiu's first aid training course.
The young woman in Colt's entourage, her double braids now pulled back behind her, administered CPR. Her face was focused, serene, controlled. Nobody but Kengo dared interrupt her. Opposite her, Spike's enormous roommate knelt and offered direction. Of all the people spellbreakers present, he was the most qualified to lend support. He looked towards Spike, but his eyes moved to the person coming up behind him.
"Grant!" Iggy gasped, as a stagehand threw out an arm to stop them from advancing. Iggy glared at them, but relented.
Before Spike could ask how Iggy knew the security guard, the young woman tilted her head up. "This isn't normal cardiac arrest. This was magickally induced. The magick has run its course, thank Goddess, but we need to defib. Now."
Spike thought to volunteer to fetch whatever she needed, but before he did, a loud, "WAIT," stopped him to the spot. All eyes went to Colt, presiding over the drama.
The young woman looked at him, her facial expression changing several modalities in rapid time. "Of course..."
Though he was normally shy and tempered, Kengo was quick to act in a crisis. "We need an AED," Kengo said firmly to his boss."
"I am an AED," Colt snapped back. He motioned for everyone to step aside. "Unless y'all want a jolt, clear the area." Nobody questioned the storm magi, who was capable of conjuring electricity. Colt brushed back his long hair and leaned forward, opening the fallen security guard's shirt. He placed his hand on his chest, and closed his eyes.
"Tryin' to find out how much voltage he needs," Colt explained, softly. His commanding presence alone turned the tension down a notch or two. "Everyone's heart beats differently." He opened his eyes and moved one hand to just below the man's ribs. "Okay," he said, eyes momentarily flashing yellow. "CLEAR!"
The man on the guard bolted up, eyes wide open, and expectorated onto the ground in front of him. Everyone drew back in shock, but Colt kept control of the situation, taking the gasping, sputtering man back down to the ground and positioning him safely.
Everyone holding their breath finally exhaled.
"You're alright now," Colt said, soothing him.
Even though he'd just quite literally come back from the brink, Grant forced himself to speak. "Don't know..." He pointed to the dressing room. "Someone was in there...wasn't supposed to be."
"Just relax," Colt said. He looked over his shoulder, at White Tiger, still in his spellbreaking gear, coming up from the other end of the hall.
"Medics are here," he said.
Colt's arched his shoulders. The shift between soothing father and angry thunder god was sudden. "What took them so Goddess-damned long!"
"They were attending to a false call at the other end of the casino," Joseph said. He narrowed his eyes.
For a second, Spike thought Joseph was throwing Colt's anger back in his face, but that wasn't it. He looked between the two men. Whatever silent telepathy he and Colt exchanged, it was serious and in agreement.
"Damn it..." Colt said. "That's mighty sus."
On the floor, Grant winced. "The big guy in the gold mask...I just assumed he was one of your guys..." He pointed to the opposite corridor where, presumably, this person had been standing.
"Is that the guy who did this to you?" Colt asked. At the end of the hall, a thunder of footsteps announced the coming of the medical staff.
"No," Grant choked.
Kengo looked at Colt with great concern, worried the strain might hurt the guard further, but Colt held up a hand. "No. Let him talk. He's a tough one, aren't ya Mr. Partridge?"
The kind words elicited a weak smile from the struggling guard. "He told me someone snuck into Tiger's room..." Grant said through his teeth. He was saturated with sweat, and his dark skin was pallid gray. "Didn't have time to argue. Someone was in there. I went for my gun. And then..." he strained. It was easy to figure out the rest. Whoever was in there was quicker, and they didn't need bullets. "Just...one touch."
Now, it was Marcy and the woman with the sunflower pendant who shared the knowing glance.
Spike, hands to his mouth in shock, stood back and let the professionals take command. His ears only perked him at Iggy muttering under their breath, right beside them.
"Just like my dressing room earlier..." the pink-haired spellbreaker said. "Something's not right here..."
The white-robed medical magi attended to Grant, dismissing everyone else. Colt's edict was for all assembled to take five, leaving Cian, Spike, and Kengo sitting on an upholstered bench out in the lobby, where attendees lingered for the last call at the bar. It was only for the look on the three young fighter's faces that prevented any fans from coming up to offer a congratulatory word or ask for an autograph. They didn't say much of anything to each other.
"I'll get us some water," Spike finally said, uncomfortable with the tense silence, and tired of feeling useless besides. He walked over to the concession area, but his eyes caught sight of a familiar face, standing just to the side. The young woman's hands clutched to her chest in deep worry.
The girl in lace and the sunflower pendant looked over at Spike. Her expression changed. Serene. Composed. Friendly.
"Hey there," she said.
Despite everything that had just happened, Spike couldn't help but smile. "Hey. I'm Spike." He wanted to add, are you Colt's girlfriend? But this wasn't the appropriate time.
"Nice to meet you," she said. "Sorry for not introducing myself earlier. I'm Lily. I've known Colt for a long time, if you were wondering. And Marcy is a friend as well. That was an impressive match of yours, earlier tonight."
"Oh." Spike turned red and looked away. "Impressively embarrassing, you mean."
"Hahaha, not at all." The young woman placed her hands behind her back. "Iggy is an interesting one. We Light magi don't normally lend our magickal talents to combat, but we can be tough as hell, you know."
"Well, I know now." A Light magi? Odd. She wasn't a spellbreaker. Certainly didn't look the typical fan either, though Spike knew better than to stereotype.
Before Spike could follow up, Lily lowered her voice. "You didn't happen to notice anything odd in you dressing room tonight either, did you?"
"You think I'm at the level were I'd have a dressing room?" Spike balked. But he shook his head. This wasn't the time to be a brat. "No. Not really. Iggy—the jerk who kicked my ass—said something about their room getting messed with too. Do you think...someone was trying to break in?"
Lily placed a finger to her lips. She had a way of thinking deeply before speaking, a concept very foreign to Spike. "I suspect that's exactly what happened. And I don't think it was a robbery attempt either."
"You'd have to be pretty stupid to try and rob a giant, buff, magickally enhanced fighter," Spike added, trying to be helpful.
"Or very powerful and confident in your abilities."
"Hmm. That's true." He was out of his depth, he knew. But something about all of this did bother him deeply, and not just tonight's incident. "Lily, I'm still kinda' new to spellbreaking. But there's been a lot of weird accidents happening lately."
She looked into his eyes. "Any common threads you've noticed?"
"I wish I could pick up one. But..." Spike scratched his head and winced. "I'm not the most observant dude in the world." Then, it hit him. "I mean, this is going to sound a bit silly seeing as their whole thing is being the bad guys, but Firebird Pro was here tonight and the night of this gala when—"
"Madame Zorn," Lily said, finishing his thought. "Yes, Colt told me. That's part of the reason why I'm here."
"Oh. Are you like...a detective?"
"Ha!" She smiled. "A detective of a sort, you could say. I study magick. Specifically, glyphs. And what you said about Firebird....hmmmm. Have you heard of Occam's Razor?"
"That the finishing move of some spellbreaker named Occam?"
Lily laughed, but the gravity of the situation returned to her. "So, it's the idea that the simplest theory is often the most plausible. What do we know of Firebird? Shady characters, for certain. And their president has his hands in all sorts of weird, Russian military stuff."
"Yeah, but dropping chandeliers on old rich ladies and trying to kill security guards...doesn't make sense." Spike's head hurt. He was already exhausted, and this much brain power and stress wasn't normal for him.
"Correct," Lily said. "So the question remains, 'Why'? That's what I'm trying to puzzle out. But, in regards to what happened tonight, I think whoever was in Joseph's dressing room was intending to do to him what they did to Mr. Partridge, but worse. And had Grant not been alerted by this spellbreaker in the gold mask, or whomever, they might have succeeded."
Spike felt himself go pale. That was a terrible thought. He still wasn't 100% sure what this girl Lily's deal was, or her involvement with Colt and the GSA, but she seemed like someone trustworthy. He really wished he could help her more.
"I should get going," she started, turning away. "I didn't mean to distress you."
"Wait," Spike said. He'd just remembered something. "That security guard said something about a guy in a gold mask. Sounded like he could be a luchador? I mean, who the hell else where's a mask like that? But there's no one on the card tonight who wore a mask."
"Hmmm." Lily looked off into the distance. Whatever her thoughts, she did not share them. "Las Vegas is a lot. I need sleep. Have a good night, Spike." She turned to walk away. "Oh, and can you say hi to Buck for me?"
Confused, but happy to have met someone nice, Spike smiled. "Sure thing."
